Gerolfs real name is Reingard Hirsch but he is working undercover while he is investigating Rousseau and de Mendosa, who he suspects to be members of a death cult. He has not involved the witch hunters since he wants to be sure that his hunch is correct and he wants enough material to write his next book about the hidden cults of the empire.
